The Islamabad High Court extended an order preventing authorities from arresting former Prime Minister Imran Khan until May 31. The court hearing came after the government's lawyer requested more time to provide details about cases filed against Khan. Khan did not attend the court hearing himself.
The court granted the government lawyer's request and adjourned the hearing until May 31. This came after the court had granted Khan protective bail for two weeks in another corruption case on May 13 and barred authorities from arresting him until May 15.
The court declared the arrest of Khan and two PTI leaders on May 9 as unlawful. Khan's arrest had triggered unrest across Pakistan, with protesters storming army headquarters and torching a corps commander's house. At least 10 people died in clashes, though Khan's party claims 40 of its workers were killed.
Khan was ousted as prime minister in April 2022 after losing a no-confidence vote. He has alleged that his ouster was part of a US-backed conspiracy targeting him for his foreign policy decisions regarding countries like Russia, China and Afghanistan.
