Persecution of Minorities in Pakistan goes unabated !

Date:

The situation for Pakistan's minorities has only deteriorated in recent years, owing to political infighting and rising sectarian tensions. The government has frequently failed to defend minority communities or hold violent offenders accountable. In some cases, authorities have assisted in the persecution of minorities Hindus, Christians and others. The Incidents of government's assault on the Ahmadiyya community are plenty which is considered non-Muslim under Pakistani law.

At least 50 members of ten Hindu families converted to Islam in Pakistan's southern Sindh province, alarmed Hindu activists who claimed the state was involved in the mass conversion. The people from various areas of the Mirpurkhas region of the province were converted in a ceremony held at the city's Baitul Iman New Muslim Colony seminary, according to The Express Tribune newspaper on Thursday.

Qari Taimur Rajput, one of the seminary's caretakers, confirmed that 50 people from 10 families converted to Islam, including 23 females and a one-year-old girl. According to the report, Mohammad Shamroz Khan, the son of Minister for Religious Affairs Senator Muhammad Talha Mahmood, also attended the conversion ceremony.

The US Department of State previously expressed concerns about the treatment of minorities, including Christians and Hindus, in a 2021 report on Human Rights Practises. Since 1974, Pakistan has made it illegal for the Ahmadiyya Muslim community to identify as Muslims, resulting in systematic discrimination and harassment. Legislators, diplomats, and institutions in Pakistan have been accused of denying religious hatred and discrimination while hiding behind a veil of presumed ignorance.

Despite concerns raised by some organisations and officials about the persecution of minority communities in Pakistan, the Pakistani government has denied the allegations and accused the US of favouritism. Concerned about the lack of attention paid to the serious human rights violations committed against the Ahmadiyya community, UN human rights experts have called for increased efforts to put an end to their ongoing persecution, according to Global Order.

According to Global Order, the vicious cycle of discrimination and violence against minorities in Pakistan continues, and extremists have been targeting and accusing them of blasphemy or being Islam's adversaries.

On May 4, six teachers from a minority community were assassinated. According to Geo News, several teachers from the same school were killed in two separate incidents in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Upper Kurram Tehsil.

Unidentified gunmen shot teachers on exam duty

Unidentified gunmen, according to local police, shot the teachers in the staffroom of Government High School Tari Mangal, according to a news report. At the time of the incident, all of the teachers were present in the building and were carrying out their exam duties. The authorities have declared an emergency in all of the region's hospitals.

The demolition of an Ahmadiyya mosque in Mirpur Khas, Sindh, and the murder of a young member of a minority group in Astore, Gilgit Baltistan, are examples of minority rights violations in the country.

Furthermore, on April 26, 2023, protests by minority communities against false blasphemy cases and forced conversions outside the Lahore Press Club highlighted the issue of widespread discrimination against minorities, according to Global Order.
