Veteran actor Taha Shah Badussha is said to have ruffled a few feathers on the set of the much-awaited period drama series Heeramandi during filming of a pivotal emotional scene. According to additional director Snehil Dixit Mehra, Shah refused her direction to portray tears during the dramatic moment, remarking “men don’t cry”.
Mehra has now opened up about some of the challenges of helming her debut project, working alongside industry icons. In a recent interview, she recalled the exchange with Shah over the sensitive scene portrayal. “We had to do multiple retakes as the actor was initially resisting the suggestion to allow vulnerability in his performance.”
However, the seasoned thespian eventually relented after acknowledging Mehra’s role. “He graciously conceded it was important for full audience empathy.” Mehra praised Shah’s professionalism, adding “With his experience, he guided me as a newcomer.”
The insightful director also shared feeling overawed directing accomplished veterans like Farida Jalal. “I was nervous giving direction to someone I looked up to. But they reassured me with their warmth.” Mehra credited veteran cinematographers Sudeep Chatterjee and Mahesh Limaye for their expertise and encouragement.
Heeramandi has been widely anticipated since its surprise announcement. With its ensemble cast led by Singh, Koirala and Hydari, the saga depicts lives in an era’s iconic courtesans. Streaming now on a major platform, early reviews have praised its craft and exploration of feminist themes.
