Some of 's most successful wrestlers threatened to throw their prestigious medals into the Ganga late Tuesday evening. On some interventions they agreed to give the government another chance to provide justice to the wronged wrestlers.
It is worth recalling that two days back, the Prime Minister dedicated the new Parliament building and was presented with a Sengol (a sceptre symbolising ethical and fair governance) by a high priest. Around the same time, a stone's throw away, Delhi Police was engaged in a wrestling match with some of India's most famous wrestlers, who were demanding justice.
According to the protesting wrestlers, the matter was first reported to the police, then to the Indian Olympic Association, and finally to Minister Anurag Thakur. Finally, they petitioned the Supreme Court, which ordered the police to register the case. The accused is still an MP and has refused to resign from the WFI, claiming that the charges are unfounded. As a result, the wrestlers decided to organise a “mahapanchayat” for women.
However, their statement is partly denied by none other than the Indian Olympic Association Chairperson, PT Usha who had tweeted earlier that the wrestlers should have approached the IOA on their grievances before going to streets. Moreover, Usha who is one of the most respected sportspersons of India tried to intervene at the protest site but she was met with inappropriate treatment by the protesting wrestlers.
It is no secret that the Wrestling Federation president enjoys political protection, and it is questioned that a man accused of molesting over a dozen women refuses to step down until the investigation is completed.
Sexual exploitation of minor girls by sports federation officials is a worldwide problem; the Olympic Committee has a separate law and board to address it. In the Indian context, however, it is more than just sexual harassment. These young women come from rural villages where “sexual exploitation” means “loss of family honour.”
Cases like the one involving the wrestlers degrade not only our athletes, but all women. According to reports, the sportswomen's decision to call a Mahapanchayat is considered “deliberate provocation” by the authorities.
There are claims and counter-claims from both sides. A probe committee led by renown sportsperson Mary Comm was formed to go deep into the charges which the wrestlers had already rejected. FIR has been lodged after the intervention of the Supreme Court.
The veracity of charges have to be probed in all fairness but a person heading a autonomous sports body cannot be put in jail without any proof which is the subject matter of investigation. If Brij Mohan is found guilty then he should be punished severely. And if he is innocent and the allegations against him are false then these wrestlers should be banned.
However, the issue seems to have been mishandled right from the beginning. Going to street protests straightway ended up in confrontation and brought a bad name to the country. The sports bodies are being governed by their internal set rules and there have been procedures to be followed for the removal of those heading these bodies. There is no role of prime minister in the matter of such criminal complaints
Further, aach athlete has their own issues with authorities, and they have been dealing with someone, in some way or another, for a very long time. As a result, they demand a reform with universal rules to alleviate the difficulties they face.
One thing is sure to emerge out of this episode and that is an issue bigger than mere complaints of sexual harassment of women athletes by senior sports persons, couches and top managers of level sports authorities.
They anticipate an unbiased legal investigation, followed by Justice, into financial irregularities, financial impropriety, unsympathetic planning, mental harassment, and sexual exploitation by federation officials.
Let the truth come out and prevail in future.
