In a first, endoscopic foreign body removal performed at DH Pulwama

Date:

Srinagar, Nov 26: In a rare case, a successful
endoscopic foreign body removal from stomach was
performed at District hospital Pulwama.
The procedure was conducted by Dr Tariq Ahmad Paddar,
Dr Syed Asif Rafiq and Feroz Ahmad (Technician).

Dr Tariq Ahmad Paddar, said that a young boy with a
history of ingestion of chicken bone chip, got stuck at
Crico-pharynx, reported to ENT department district
hospital Pulwama.
After the examination the patient was immediately rushed
to the Endoscopy section where a team of doctors
removed the bone chip, he said.
“This emergency procedure was first of its kind done at
DH Pulwama and this is a lifesaving procedure as the
patient was saved from surgery,” he said.
He said that people sometimes swallow food or foreign
bodies that become stuck in the digestive tract.
“Usually, the items pass through the digestive tract and
are excreted from the body in stool. When a foreign object
does not pass from the body on its own, you may need
different procedures to remove it but endoscopic foreign
body removal is an easy and lifesaving procedure,” he
said.
Notably, to perform this procedure doctors use an
endoscope. This long, flexible tube has a lighted camera
at its tip and channels for inserting instruments through the
scope. The doctor passes the endoscope through the
mouth and into the oesophagus to see the obstruction.
Using the instruments, the doctor can remove the foreign
body.
