5 incidents of stone pelting reported today: Police
Srinagar, Aug 27: Kashmir valley continued to shut their business and parts of it reel under curfew for the 50th day in the wake of violent street protests Curfew continued to be in force in five police station areas of downtown city and Maisuma areas in uptown, a police official said. In southern districts, curfew was imposed in Pulwama, while it continued in Anantnag, Kulgam districts as well on Saturday. Curfew and restrictions also remained in force in some restive areas including Sopore, Pattan, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara.
Heavy security arrangements foiled the separatists' bid to hold Badamibadh march to present letters to Armed Forces asking them to vacate Jammu and Kashmir. All the roads leading towards Badamibagh had been sealed while the movement of people were restricted by erecting barbed wires at a number of spots in Srinagar city.
As usual strict curfew remained in force in Old Srinagar city while the movement of the people and commuters were restricted in uptown.
The Zonal Police Headquarters, Kashmir today said that barring five incidents of stone pelting in Anantnag, Shopian and Bandipora, overall situation remained peaceful and under control across Kashmir valley till filing of this report.
“The stone pelting incidents were reported from Barbugh, Hillow, Kadgam in Shopian, Sangam in Anantnag and Watpora, Potshah in Bandipora,” a spokesman of ZPHQ Kashmir said. He said some miscreants in order to disturb the situation assembled on roads and pelted stones on police and security force deployments.
The spokesman said restrictions under section 144/CrPC remained in force in the valley. “However, curfew was imposed in Srinagar city, Anantnag, Pulwama and Pampore towns,” he said.
Protests erupted in Marhama Sangam area of Anantnag district on Saturday morning after people fished out the body of a 25 year old youth from the River Jehlum who according to locals' version had jumped into the river when CRPF personnel were chasing the protesters in the area on Friday evening.
The deceased youth has been identified as Shahnawaz Ahmed Khatana son of Muhammad Iqbal a resident of Doddu Marhama.
Over a dozen people were injured when forces fired pellets and tear-smoke shells on people who had gathered in Hanjuvera village of Pattan town in Baramulla district to organize a ‘pro-freedom' rally on Saturday morning.
When contacted SSP Baramulla Mir Imtiyaz Hussain told that a large number of youth had blocked highway who were checking the identity cards of commuters. When police intervened they pelted stones on the security forces and few tear-smoke shells were lobbed to disperse them.
Meanwhile, in Pattan town two members of a family were shifted to SDH Hospital Pattan after they were hit by pellets.
