As world leaders gathered in Washington DC this week for the NATO summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need for swift action against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked war in his country.
In remarks to the assembled delegation on Tuesday, Zelensky stated that the international response should not wait until after the upcoming US midterm elections in November. He pointed out that some may see the election cycle as a reason for delay, but stressed the critical importance of maintaining pressure on the Kremlin to end its deadly invasion.
The Ukrainian leader has proven adept at rallying support from allies during the ongoing conflict. However, full NATO membership remains out of reach for Ukraine at this time due to concerns about being drawn into direct military engagement with Russia.
Despite this barrier, Zelensky received assurances from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg that Western backing for Ukraine’s self-defense efforts would not waver. Both reaffirmed their commitment to assisting Ukraine with air defense systems and other equipment to counter intensifying Russian missile and drone strikes on civilian infrastructure.
For his part, US President Joe Biden announced additional aid for these vital air defenses. Other NATO members also pledged new defensive arms shipments in the coming months. Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany emphasized his nation’s unwavering solidarity with Ukraine during this challenging phase of the war.
As the summit closed, Zelensky emphasized that the world must retain a sense of urgency about aiding Ukraine’s struggle against Russian aggression. With winter approaching and no end in sight for the conflict, continued support will be critical to the country’s survival.
