US Senate Passes Bill to Pause Trump’s Iran Military Campaign

Washington, Jun 24: The US Senate has passed a resolution to pause President Donald Trump’s military campaign against Iran, requiring congressional approval before any further military action is undertaken.

The Senate approved the measure by a 50-48 vote on Tuesday after it had earlier been cleared by the House of Representatives. The resolution marks the first time a war powers measure has successfully passed both chambers of the US Congress.

Although Republicans hold a majority in the Senate, four Republican senators joined nearly all Democrats in backing the resolution. One Democratic senator voted against the measure.

The resolution allows a limited US military presence to remain in West Asia to counter any imminent threat against the United States or its allies.

Under the US Constitution, Congress has the sole authority to declare war. However, that constitutional balance has gradually weakened over the past 75 years as successive presidents have deployed American forces in overseas conflicts without formal declarations of war.

The resolution seeks to reaffirm Congress’ constitutional role in authorising military action while placing limits on further operations against Iran unless lawmakers grant approval. (Agencies)
