World Boxing Championships: Mary Kom, Manju Rani, Jamuna Boro, Lovlina Borgohain storm into semifinals

In Boxing, Mary Kom, Manju Rani, Jamuna Boro and Lovlina Borgohain have stormed into the semifinals of the Women's Boxing Championships at Ulan Ude in Russia.

Six-time champion MC Mary Kom (51kg) assured herself of an unprecedented eighth medal after advancing to the semifinals. She has become the first and the only boxer, irrespective of the gender, to win eight medals in the world boxing championship. 3rd seeded Mary Kom went past Cuban men's boxing legend Felix Savon's tally of 7 World Championships medals.


Mary Kom defeated Rio Olympic bronze medallist Ingrit Valencia of Colombia 5-0 to reach the semi-final. She will next take on second-seeded Turk Busenaz Cakiroglu on Saturday. This is the Mary Kom's first World Championships medal in the 51kg category. Mary has 6 gold medals and a silver at the World Championships so far.

In other bouts, Manju Rani beat Kim Hyang Mi in 48-kilogram category to reach semi-finals. She will take on Thailand's Chuthamat RaksatJamuna in the next bout.

Jamuna Boro beat Ursula Gottlob to enter 54-kilogram semifinals. Boro will take on top seed and former Asian Games bronze-medallist Huang Hsiao-Wen of Chinese Taipei.

Lovlina Borgohain secured the fourth medal for by beating Karolina Koszewska of Poland to enter 69kg semifinals. Borgohain's opponent in the semifinals would be China's Yang Liu.

All the semi-final bouts are scheduled for tomorrow.
