Srinagar, Sep 07: The non-implementation of Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act from last one year has left hundreds of disabled persons in and to suffer, who have demanded authorities to implement the act at an earliest.

Talking to us, spokesman of Jammu and Kashmir Handicapped Association (JKHA), Abrar Ahmad said that the government has miserably failed to implement the RPWD Act in Jammu and Kashmir after the reorganization of J&K last year.

He added that since last year, they have approached many officials concerned, demanding implementation of RPWD Act, but to no avail. Abrar added the association has now sought time from Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to apprise him about the situation, saying that they have not received permission yet to meet him.

Abrar, who is also district Srinagar president of the association, further stated that the absence of RPWD Act has left the disabled persons to lurch at large, adding that most of the handicapped persons are jobless. “They are not getting reservations for the at present and are not even able to start their own units due to the absence of the RPWD Act,” he said.

He added that to implement the Act in Jammu and Kashmir, the government had recently sought suggestions from the people, which is unjust and unfair. “Jammu and Kashmir is the only place where suggestions are being sought for the implementation of RPWD Act. We don't even understand the reason behind getting suggestions,” he said.

The association later demanded authorities to implement the RPWD Act in Jammu and Kashmir at an earliest so that the disabled persons here could heave a sigh of relief—(KNO)
