A jolt to Wrestling Federation of India

Date:

Amidst the thunderous celebrations across the nation on its conquering Moon, an unpleasant news has given a severe setback to the Wrestling in India, when United Wrestling (UWW) has suspended the Adhoc Committee running the affairs of wrestling in India for violation of not holding its elections. Contrary to what is being broadcasted on and off with regard to promotion of sports, the present state of affairs of one of the games in which India has given phenomenal performances in recent years seems to be hanging in balance because the reports pouring in are not at all promising as the world governing body, United World Wrestling (UWW) has suspended the adhoc committee running the sport in the country.

It is really unfortunate that the country which never gets tired of boasting steps taken to excel in the sporting arena worldwide, is likely to participate in upcoming Asian Games and World Championships under a neutral flag if the things which have gone haywire shall not be rectified well in time.

The deferring of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) polls thrice in the last two months seems to be the reason behind the harsh decision taken by the world body UWW in May this year had condemned the detention of protesting wrestlers and threatened to suspend the adhoc panel if the election is not conducted within the stipulated deadline.

Going by the deteriorating situation arising out of confrontation between the wrestlers with many medalists, and those running the affairs of wrestling in the country, it seems that until the top hierarchy in the government will not intervene, the chances of things getting smoother are bleak and damage to the Indian wrestling fraternity has become inevitable.

Reportedly, the world body has given 45 days to conduct an election but that deadline was not respected as the poll deferment has happened thrice with the and Punjab High Court staying the election process. Post suspension of aforesaid adhoc committee, the Indian Olympic Association will take care of athletes at the Asian Games but they will have to compete under neutral flag at various international tournaments, which is something sordid and testimony to the fact that this sport is not in the right hands thus making it necessary for the top echelon in power to immediately clear clutter and ensure that wrestling fraternity should not face the heat for no fault.

What is coming to fore is unfortunate and unbelievable because India never faced such a crisis when there was no noise on special attention on sports but today when the government is lauding its efforts on each and every platform, the situation of this sport is dwindling giving a bad name to the country.
