Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday chaired a virtual review meeting on Covid-19. This meeting was held at a time when both the Delta and Omicron variants are fuelling a surge in cases of infection in parts of the country.

The meeting was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. Top officials part of the meeting included the Aviation Secretary, Home Secretary, Cabinet Secretary, and Chairman of the Railway Board, among others.

During the review meeting on Sunday, the Prime Minister directed officials to ensure adequate health infrastructure at the district level and accelerate the vaccination drive for teenagers in “mission mode”.

Officials made a presentation during the review meeting and told the Prime Minister that 31 per cent teenagers in the age group of 15-18 have been administered with the first dose so far.

We need continuous scientific research in testing, vaccines and pharmacological interventions, including genome sequencing, given that the virus is evolving continuously, PM Modi said, as per a statement by the PMO.

The Prime Minister also directed officials to ensure the continuity of non-Covid health services and leverage telemedicine to ramp up the availability of health-related guidance to people in remote and rural areas.

PM Modi conveyed gratitude for the relentless services provided by healthcare workers in managing the pandemic, the statement added.
