Washington, Jun 27: The United States has carried out airstrikes on Iranian military targets in response to a drone attack on a cargo ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz, with the US Central Command (CENTCOM) saying missile and drone launch sites as well as coastal radar installations were targeted overnight.
The strikes followed remarks by US President Donald Trump at the White House, where he said there would be consequences for what he described as Iran’s violation of the ceasefire agreement.
Meanwhile, the British military said a container ship was hit by a projectile off the coast of Oman just hours after Iran warned commercial vessels against using the route. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre said no injuries were reported in the incident.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has suspended the evacuation of stranded ships following the attack on the commercial vessel near Oman, saying evacuation operations will resume only after guarantees are received that ships can transit safely without being attacked.
