Jammu and Kashmir has been the epicentre of dreaded Pak sponsored terror assaults with the Poonch, Rajouri and Kashmir valley bearing the gravest brunt. More than 40 Pakistani terrorists infiltrated into India through the International Border in Jammu and later moved to the Valley as per National Investigation Agency (NIA) report. The National Investigation Agency found this information while interrogating Over Ground Workers (OGWs) working for Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM).
A detailed report to the Union Home Ministry warning that Pakistani terror outfits were now utilizing the international border i.e. Jammu to infiltrate.
The authority cautioned that the quantity of infiltrators could be considerably higher.
India shares a 740km-long LoC with Pakistan while the length of the international border in Jammu and Kashmir is 221 km. The Border Security Force (BSF) guards the entire India-Pakistan border, but at LoC the force works under the command of the Army.
It is clear that Pakistan is trying to find safe passages for infiltration through Jammu. The Union Home Ministry should take lessons from the past and beef up the security paraphernalia across the International Border (IB).
In November 2016, a group of three Pakistani terrorists suspected to be affiliated to the Jaish infiltrated into India from Kathua-Samba sector of J&K and carried out an attack on the 166 Medium Regiment Camp in Nagrota. Seven soldiers were killed in the attack and eventually all three attackers were neutralised later. In January that year, a group of terrorists stole a car belonging to a Punjab police official before launching a deadly attack that killed seven soldiers in the Pathankot Air base.
The past few months have been hard on the state with intensified terror attacks in Kashmir Valley. Ladakh region have been peaceful while Jammu region though seems normal invariably bear the sporadic incidents of terror. An aggressive vigil needs to be kept at the strategic pockets of the IB which are exploited by the Pakistani terror outfits to infiltrate into India. The leaks on the IB which have been used earlier by the terrorists need to be plugged. An information dissemination mechanism needs to be developed for cautioning masses against any suspicious movement while ensuring their own safety.
The security forces guarding borders and J&K Police have challenging task ahead and need to be vigilant as any relenting may cost dearly.
