JKLF Chief taken into custody

Date:

Srinagar:  JKLF Chief Yasin Malik was today taken into custody after he tried to take out a protest rally against alleged high-handedness of Special Operation Group (SOG) of local police during a raid on his Maisuma residence here.

Malik was taken into custody at Budshah Chowk and lodged at Shergari police station in the city after he led a rally to Lal Chowk from his Maisuma residence to protest nocturnal raid on his house shortly after his release on bail from central jail last night, a spokesman of JKLF said.

He said police also resorted to teargas shelling and used batons to disperse the rally, leading to clashes in Maisuma.

“Malik was arrested on May 25 and was released on bail from Central Jail Srinagar late last night. At around 11.30 PM, policemen raided his house and started beating and abusing his family following which the people of Maisuma came out to lodge their protest against this but police resorted to teargas shelling and also used pepper gas,” the spokesman said.

Prior to his arrest, Malik addressed media persons on the main road and claimed that he is being targeted because he started a campaign to bring about a unity between factions of Hurriyat Conference and JKLF.
