New Delhi, Jul 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the Digital India initiative has transformed governance, empowered citizens and accelerated inclusive development, asserting that the programme has given India a new identity on the global stage over the past 11 years.
Marking 11 years of the flagship initiative, Modi said Digital India has touched every aspect of life by making governance more transparent, efficient and accessible.
“Today, we mark 11 years since the Digital India initiative was launched. This initiative has redefined governance, empowered citizens and accelerated all-round development. It has touched every aspect of life,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.
He highlighted the expansion of seamless digital payments, direct benefit transfers and digital public infrastructure, saying technology has become a powerful tool for improving the ease of living.
Modi said the digital revolution has reached villages as well as tier-2 and tier-3 cities, fostering innovation and enabling young entrepreneurs, startups and innovators across the country to develop solutions to global challenges.
He said the initiative has strengthened sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, commerce and public service delivery while positioning India to make rapid strides in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and quantum computing.
“Our focus will remain on creating a future where technology serves humanity, empowers every citizen and drives sustainable development,” he said.
Describing Digital India as the foundation of a developed and self-reliant nation, Modi said the programme has played a key role in empowering the poor and underprivileged while simplifying citizens’ lives.
He said the expansion of optical fibre networks and the rapid growth of digital transactions have drawn global attention towards India’s digital transformation.
Officials said that before the launch of Digital India in 2015, public services were largely dependent on paperwork and physical visits. The initiative helped bridge the digital divide by expanding internet connectivity and bringing essential services online through affordable digital access.
Over the past decade, Digital India has emerged as the backbone of the country’s digital economy and Digital Public Infrastructure. India now leads the world in real-time digital payments, with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) accounting for nearly 49 per cent of the global transaction volume. (Agencies)
