Netherlands defeat Romania 3-0 to advance to Euro 2024 quarterfinals

Netherlands Edge Past Romania to Reach Quarterfinals

The Dutch came into this knockout game having finished third in their group, with two draws and a loss in the preliminary stage. Romania, meanwhile, topped Group E with four points from three games.

At the Allianz Arena in Munich, it was the 1988 champions Netherlands who dictated proceedings for much of the match. They opened the scoring in the 20th minute through Cody Gakpo, who curled a left-footed effort past the goalkeeper.

Romania tried to mount a comeback but failed to truly trouble the Dutch defense. In the second half, Netherlands sealed their spot in the last eight with two goals from Donyell Malen. The striker first tapped in from close range in the 83rd minute before adding another in injury time.

The 3-0 scoreline was a fair reflection of the match, with Ronald Koeman's men creating the better opportunities throughout. While Romania topped their group, they were second best against an in-form Netherlands attack on Saturday.

Memphis Depay and Gakpo were standout performers for the Netherlands. Both were a constant threat with their movement and technical skills. For Romania, Ianis Hagi showed glimpses but lacked support in the offensive third.

With this victory, the Netherlands kept their tournament alive and marched into the quarterfinals. There they will face the winner of the Austria vs Turkey match that takes place later on Saturday. Romania's Euro 2024 campaign ended in the first knockout round.
