A terrifying landslide struck the upscale Sherman Oaks neighborhood of Los Angeles early Wednesday morning, leaving two multimillion-dollar homes teetering on the edge of disaster. The pre-dawn mudslide was described as “mother of all landslides” by eyewitnesses, destroying one home completely while splitting off the deck and pool of a second property.
Located just a short drive from downtown LA, Sherman Oaks is known as one of the city’s most affluent areas, with lavish estates dotting the scenic hills. However, tragedy struck without warning as tons of wet soil came crashing down the slope before 3AM. Emergency crews rushed to the site but fortunately found no casualties – though further evacuations were ordered as a precaution given the unstable terrain.
Experts believe the unrelenting winter storms pounding Southern California brought nearly double the usual rainfall levels for this time of year, completely saturating the grounds. Similar smaller-scale mudslides have occurred across the region in recent weeks, demonstrating how dangerously liquified the soil has become.
In aerial footage of the disaster zone, the colossal scale of damage was on full display. Where a multi-million dollar home once proudly stood, nothing remained but piles of rubble. Nearby, another luxury residence including its pool and deck had been ruthlessly ripped away and were now balanced on a knife’s edge over an enormous chasm. Emergency teams worked tirelessly to drain one teetering pool at risk of collapse into the void below.
As the National Weather Service forecasts more rain on the horizon, the emergency remains ongoing for these wealthy LA homeowners who saw their properties transformed in an instant from oases of tranquility to a perilous battle for survival against the unforgiving forces of nature. Only time will tell if they canhang on, or face being swallowed up by the soggy mountainside below.
