J&K Must Create New Exporters to Meet 2030 Export Target: CM Omar

Srinagar, June 29: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday called for creating a new generation of exporters while strengthening existing ones, saying Jammu and Kashmir must diversify its export base to achieve the goal of doubling exports by 2030.

Addressing the inaugural session of the International Buyer-Seller Meet 2026 at SKICC, Srinagar, Omar said the event has brought together foreign buyers, domestic exporters, artisans, manufacturers and Self-Help Groups (SHGs), opening new avenues for local products to access global markets.

The Chief Minister said Jammu and Kashmir has a strong legacy of exports, particularly in handicrafts and tourism, but changing market dynamics require a greater focus on organised international trade. He said the government is committed to helping local entrepreneurs, artisans and rural producers emerge as exporters.

Highlighting the region’s export potential, Omar said nearly 98 per cent of J&K’s exports currently originate from just four districts, underscoring the need to expand export activity across the Union Territory. He added that buyers from nearly 15 countries are participating in the two-day event, providing valuable exposure to global market demand.

Announcing the “Know Your Artisan” initiative, the Chief Minister said it would connect international buyers directly with artisans while showcasing the heritage and craftsmanship behind J&K’s handmade products.

He also stressed the need to simplify export procedures and establish a dry port to ensure exports from Jammu and Kashmir are officially registered within the Union Territory.

Expressing confidence that the International Buyer-Seller Meet would strengthen trade ties and generate fresh business opportunities, Omar reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding the global footprint of Jammu and Kashmir‘s products.
