Veteran actress looks back at filming iconic dance number
Mandira Bedi, a renowned name in the Indian film industry, recently opened up about her experience shooting for one of the most revered romantic films of all time, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. In a candid conversation, she reminisced about working alongside powerhouse talents like Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol on the debut directorial of Aditya Chopra.
Bedi recalled feeling overwhelmed during the initial days of filming the iconic song “Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna”, as choreographer Saroj Khan pushed her to move beyond her comfort zone. “Dancing has never been my strongest suit,” she admitted. Khan prodded her to loosen up and embrace her femininity, urging dramatic hip movements instead of stiff shoulder shakes. While the legendary choreographer's guidance was invaluable, it was certainly challenging for Bedi to find her rhythm.
She fondly remembered her leading man, Shah Rukh Khan, for his gentle and supportive demeanour throughout the shoots. “No matter how many retakes were needed, he maintained his professionalism and put me at ease,” she remarked. On the other hand, she felt a disconnect with her co-star Kajol in the beginning, though they eventually warmed up to each other.
Overall, Bedi expressed deep appreciation for being a part of the film that went on to become a massive cultural phenomenon. Looking back, she is thankful for the opportunities and lessons gained from the experience, which undoubtedly holds a special place in her career.
