Where does JK stand to face seismic eventuality?

    Date:

The Nature God seems to be a bit enraged these days as day in day out the Omnipotent Entity has been testing the patience and the capabilities of the humankind by again and again putting the population to tests and troubles as floods, fire and fury of tremors have become a regular feature with not even a single day passing without the news of any of such calamities taking place across the .

What is more agonizing is the fact that the Nature God is more focused on the region where J&K is situated as in the last few months, hardly there is a surrounding place where tremors have not been felt, as if the Omniscient Entity is giving a warning to the people of J&K to get ready for the big thing or else things will go haywire as in the case of many countries in recent times including Turkey and most recently Afghanistan, which again felt tremors a day before with one death reported so far.

It is a serious matter because Delhi-NCR has been reportedly hit by another tremor having magnitude 3.1 at Richter scale. According to NCS, the nodal agency of the Union Government for monitoring earthquake activity in the country, the tremors were felt at 4.08 PM. This was the second time in a fortnight that tremors shook the national capital. Earlier, on October 3, strong tremors were felt in the Delhi-NCR region, with locals rushing out of their homes and offices in panic. The NCS had stated that tremors were from two earthquakes that struck Nepal on October 3, the first of magnitude 4.6 magnitudes and the second recorded at 6.2 on the Richter scale.

This is not all, as a new earthquake has hit western Afghanistan; several days after two large tremors in the region killed hundreds of people. Reportedly, the magnitude 6.3 quake struck near the city of Herat. It was at a depth of 6.3 km (four miles). Apart from these, the earth has shaken in Katra, Doda and other places in J&K and also the UT of , many times in the recent past.

It is pertinent to mention that five consecutive low intensity tremors had jolted the and in June this year, giving a strong message to the government and the residents of the UT to gird up loins and probably get ready for a bigger jolt as the region falls in critical seismic zone and probability of a bigger intensity earthquake in near future cannot be ruled out.

The high frequency of tectonic plates' collisions in and around J&K is a matter of great concern and therefore it has become imperative for the concerned agencies to remain on tenterhooks and be ready for the worst. The number of earthquakes in the region is giving an indication that everything is not right beneath the earth's crust and therefore all stakeholders should remain prepared for any kind of eventuality.

Conventionally, whenever the region was struck by big tremors major devastation took place but the question is whether we have learnt from the past experience or the same story of death and destruction will be repeated if God forbid a high intensity tremor would hit the region? The frequent occurrence of earthquakes is calling for preparation on war footing because any time the people of the UT can face a situation which many of them have not even thought of in their wildest dreams.

As it is said that a stitch in time saves nine, it is high time to go for measures to prevent damage, although considering the attitude of helmsmen in this matter of grave concern no one can say that the dispensation is serious and the prerequisite steps have been taken so far.
