It is intriguing that in three consecutive days, three major airports have witnessed unprecedented mishaps including roof collapse at Delhi Airport leading to death of a man. The embarrassment following unraveling of corruption and careless attitude of the concerned quarters behind the poor quality construction has led the civil aviation ministry to order a thorough inspection of the structural strength of all airports in the country exposing further that the people sitting at helm are also uncertain about the quality of construction of the rest of the airports, which is a matter of grave concern. It revealed that things under the present regime are at the mercy of God since helmsmen have no idea about what is happening around.
In this context, the reports have confirmed that authorities at the Srinagar International Airport have begun a structural safety audit of all buildings on its premises as a preventive measure.
It is pertinent to mention that the concerned airport authority had tied up with the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar to assist in a structural safety audit directed by the concerned Union Minister, and it is likely that the outcome of the audit will be submitted to the concerned quarters within days. Though the aforementioned inspection and audit work has been started in Srinagar airport, the status of its counterpart in winter capital of J&K viz Jammu is still not clear because the authorities at Jammu Airport have not come out with any word on the aforesaid audit directed by the concerned central ministry.
It is utmost necessary that the people helming the affairs of Jammu airport should also order the structural safety audit of the airport building and come clear on the issue by issuing a public statement as well because it is necessary to win the confidence of the commuters, which has been dented severely due to horrendous and nightmarish experience of people at Jabalpur, New Delhi and Rajkot airports.
There is no doubt that the authorities at Jammu airport must be doing the needful to fulfill the demand raised by the concerned union ministry with regard to inspection of the airport building but owing to onset of monsoon and forecast of rains, it becomes imperative for the concerned quarters to accelerate things to avoid any distasteful incident.
