Statehood in J&K to be restored as promised: HM Shah

New Delhi, Mar 29: Union Home Minister Amit Shah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, as promised, but refrained from giving a specific timeline. Speaking at the “Times Now Summit 2025″ on Friday night, Shah emphasized that while the promise stands, the timing of the restoration will not be disclosed in a public forum.

“We have given the assurance that statehood will be restored. From the very beginning, we have said that statehood would be given. But it can’t be disclosed when it will be given at a public forum,” Shah stated when asked about the timeline for the restoration of statehood.

Shah recalled that when Article 370 was abrogated in 2019, and Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union Territories, he had assured Parliament that statehood would be reinstated at an appropriate time.

He further highlighted the peaceful assembly elections held in Jammu and Kashmir last year, describing them as a historic milestone. “This was the first election in Kashmir after 40 years in which there was no re-polling in any place. Not a single tear gas or bullet was fired. Sixty percent of people exercised their franchise, this is a huge change,” Shah noted, underscoring the positive shift in the region’s political landscape.
