SAFETY, SECURITY BEYOND PRESENCE OF POLICE

Those who are expecting police to remain present at all places to ensure safety and security of the citizens are making a grave mistake because it is unrealistic to expect men in Khaki to become omnipresent and give round the clock protection to one and all from the criminals. No one can deny that under present scenario in J&K, the police has been entangled in multifaceted jobs and therefore the onus for remaining insulated from criminals is mainly on the people, who can comply with the directions issued by the government and the police from time to time to be safe and secure against crimes.
To be more concise, crime prevention is a collective responsibility, wherein people must adhere to safety measures recommended by the police, which are designed to minimize vulnerabilities and deter criminal behaviour. It has been seen that in the recent past the crime in Jammu region has touched new heights making it imperative for the residents not to solely rely on the Khaki for their safety as there are a number of other ways through which the rising problem of crime could be mitigated.
The police no doubt is trying its level best to contain the crime as witnessed in the case of daylight robbery at a jewellery shop in Greater Kailash area, where it has arrested three persons accused in the aforesaid crime and recovered the stolen ornaments as well. This was an exemplary breakthrough for police but expecting this in all the cases of crime is impracticable.
Therefore it is imperative for businesses, especially those dealing in valuable goods, to invest in surveillance infrastructure such as CCTV cameras, as well as hiring trained security personnel. Similarly, residential areas can enhance safety by employing watchmen or security patrols on their own like people used to have ‘Theekri Pehra’ in Punjab villages during exigent times. Besides, having a liaison with local police is necessary to make neighborhoods safe and secure.
All said and done, individuals  at guard can help phenomenally to create a crime-free society.
