Apple's Next Smart Speaker Could Feature a Screen and Advanced Intelligence
Rumors suggest Apple is developing an advanced new HomePod device that may integrate a display and enhanced smart capabilities. Sources familiar with the matter indicate Apple is working on a product carrying the identifier “HomeAccessory17,1” – similar to the existing HomePod's code name. This hints the device could serve as a central hub for home automation, allowing unified control of connected devices and appliances.
If accurate, the “17” portion of the name implies it may be powered by the forthcoming A18 chip expected to debut in Apple's next iPhone lineup this fall. This would afford the speaker superior processing power over existing HomePods and potentially enable more advanced artificial intelligence features. Some speculate it could run a customized version of tvOS called “homeOS” and support intelligent assistant functions.
Additional details uncovered in Apple's backend software also reference two unreleased Apple TV models coded as “AppleTV14,4” and “AppleTV14,5.” While full specifications are uncertain, it's possible one or both may see public availability before the end of the year. However, as the project is still in development, any plans or release timings could change between now and an official announcement.
Last October, prototyping details shared on the web included images of a device labelled “B270” which resembled a HomePod but incorporated a colored LCD screen on top. If Apple does unveil an upgraded HomePod with visual and intelligent capabilities, it could help further integrate the smart home and improve the user experience through a unified control interface. Only time will tell if this rumor comes to fruition.
