New Delhi, April 1: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday announced that the Naxal problem in India has now been significantly contained, with only six districts remaining most affected by left-wing extremism, down from 12 in the previous review. Shah emphasized that the Modi government is committed to eradicating Naxalism completely by March 31, 2026, and building a “Sashakt, Surakshit, and Samriddh Bharat.”
In a post on the microblogging site X, Shah stated, “Taking a giant stride towards building a Naxal-free Bharat, today our nation achieved a new milestone by significantly reducing the number of districts most affected by left-wing extremism to just 6 from 12.”
According to the Union Home Ministry’s data, Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) is still prevalent in certain districts, with these regions categorized as ‘most-affected districts’ and ‘districts of concern.’ The ‘most-affected districts’ terminology was introduced in 2015, and as of the last review, 12 districts were classified under this category. However, official records show a steady decline in the number of LWE-affected districts—from 35 in 2015, to 30 in 2018, and 25 in 2021.
Shah reiterated the government’s relentless efforts towards combating Naxalism and promoting all-round development to ensure peace and stability in the country.
