Srinagar, July 5: Jammu and Kashmir has exported its first-ever consignment of premium Areko cherries and Scentrose plums to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), marking a major milestone for the Union Territory’s horticulture sector and expanding opportunities for fruit growers in international markets.
The maiden export shipment was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), reflecting the increasing global demand for premium-quality fruits from Jammu and Kashmir.
The export is expected to strengthen agricultural trade, enhance farmers’ incomes, and further establish the Union Territory as a reliable supplier of high-quality fresh produce in overseas markets.
During 2024-25, Jammu and Kashmir exported over 6.37 lakh metric tonnes of fruits, generating a turnover of more than ₹3,100 crore, underscoring the growing contribution of the horticulture sector to the region’s economy. (Agencies)
