Jammu Tawi, Jan 15: The fifth session of the Assembly of the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir is scheduled to start from 2nd of February next month but so far there has not been a decision on the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.

There is no Deputy Speaker of the J&K UT so far due to friction between the ruling National Conference (NC) and the main opposition party, the BJP.

As per the healthy Parliamentary practice, the post of Deputy Speaker goes to the main opposition party. The BJP in J&K has 29 MLAs in the 90 member House.

However, both ruling party and the opposition have so far failed to arrive at a consensus over the post of Deputy Speaker, sources said.

“We have raised the issue regarding post of Deputy Speaker with the Chief Minister several times that this post must be given to the main opposition party i.e BJP,” MLA from Jammu West,, Arvind Gupta informed the Northlines, while adding, “We will again discuss this issue in the upcoming workshop of the BJP beginning 24th of this month”.

This upcoming Budget session will be the fifth session of the J&K Assembly with no Deputy Speaker in place, which is gross violation of constitutional norms, they said.
