Jammu Tawi, Jan 15: The one and only MRI Machine of this region at the Jammu’s premier hospital, the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H), has gone defunct thus putting the patients suffering from different ailments to a higher risk.

The MRI services at GMC-Jammu will remain suspended for at least 6 weeks to come as the machine is old and outdated and requires maintenance and service, which will take more than 6 weeks, reliable sources informed.

They said that on an average around 40-50 MRI scans are being conducted at GMC on a daily basis, and patients with different ailments get long dates for this test ranging from 1-2 months.

The situation has forced the patients from across the Jammu region to get the MRI scan from private labs and hospitals where the rate is more than double the GMC.

GMC-Jammu, the rate of MRI scan is around Rs 2300, while in the private market its is around Rs 4600. The MRI services at GMC have been suspended for maintenance of the machine.

“The MRI services in GMC will remain suspended for maintenance and servicing of the magnets and refilling of the Helium gas,” GMC-Jammu Principal, Dr Ashutosh Gupta, informed the Nothlines, while adding,” the machine is currently under warranty and maintenance is being undertaken by M/s Philips”.

The J&K govt has initiated and finalized the procurement of new MRI machine for GMC to cater to the patient load, the Principal said.
