New Delhi, July 22: India’s installed wind power capacity has reached **57,443 MW**, while wind energy projects generated **106 billion units (BU)** of electricity during FY 2025-26, reflecting steady growth in the country’s renewable energy sector, the Lok Sabha was informed on Thursday.
In a written reply, Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy **Shripad Yesso Naik** said wind power generation has registered consistent growth over the past three financial years. Citing the **Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) Report 2026**, he said India ranked **fourth globally** in cumulative wind energy installations as of December 31, 2025.
The minister said the government has undertaken several initiatives to accelerate wind energy development. Under the **Green Energy Corridor Scheme**, transmission lines and substations have been strengthened to facilitate evacuation of renewable power. The government has also waived **Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS)** charges for eligible solar and wind projects and introduced a graded ISTS charge mechanism for projects commissioned after the notified timelines.
Naik informed the House that **100 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)** is permitted in the renewable energy sector through the automatic route to attract domestic and international investments. A comprehensive transmission plan up to 2030 has also been prepared to support the expansion of renewable energy capacity.
The government has notified the **Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO)** and **Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO)** trajectory up to 2029-30, making renewable energy consumption mandatory for designated consumers under the Energy Conservation Act, with penalties for non-compliance.
Other measures include revised bidding guidelines for renewable energy projects, a **Viability Gap Funding (VGF)** scheme for offshore wind projects, implementation of net metering provisions under the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020, and the **National Repowering and Life Extension Policy for Wind Power Projects, 2023** to enhance the efficiency of ageing wind farms.
The government said these policy reforms and infrastructure investments are expected to further strengthen India’s clean energy transition and boost the contribution of wind power to the country’s renewable energy targets.
