J&K Assembly adjourned following ruckus over Waqf Act, PDP members marshalled out

Jammu, Apr 8 — The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly was adjourned for half an hour today after a ruckus broke out in the House over the disallowance of an adjournment motion to discuss the Waqf Amendment Bill. Members of the National Conference (NC), Congress, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) raised objections to the Bill, leading to chaotic scenes.

This marks the second consecutive day in which the treasury benches did not permit the House to function smoothly. NC members, led by Salman Sagar, along with PDP’s Sajad Gani Lone, called for the Budget Session to be adjourned in order to discuss the contentious Bill. The issue was raised as soon as the House convened for the day.

As Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather sought to start the Question Hour, the protesting members, including those from NC, Congress, PDP, and several independent MLAs, stormed the well of the House, raising slogans against the “black law.” Amid the uproar, PDP member Wahid Para sought to introduce a resolution in the House, but the Speaker rejected it, stating it could not be entertained at that moment.

Para attempted to enter the well of the House but was marshalled out by the security staff on the Speaker’s orders. Earlier, nine members from the opposition parties had submitted a notice to the Speaker to adjourn the business for discussions on the issue. The House had been adjourned the previous day as well due to similar disruptions.

The ongoing protests reflect the growing opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill, which continues to fuel controversy within the state legislature.
