Jammu Tawi, 5 Aug: Exactly one year after the Indian Government declared the repeal of Article 370 and the division of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu has resigned. The same was announced by the All India Radio, on Wednesday evening, however the Kashmir Raj Bhawan is silent over this development. Reports that GC Murmu has resigned were circulating on social media as well as within the UT since Wednesday.
A tweet from National Conference chief Omar Abdullah further intensified the speculations about Murmu ‘s departure. “What about all this buzz about J&K's LG? Came out of nowhere a few hours ago and all of a sudden it's all over J&K's social media and WhatsApp,” Abdullah wrote on Twitter. According to reports, GC Murmu is likely to take over as the next Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG). He is expected to replace Rajiv Mehrishi who will be retiring this week.
Murmu officially took charge as the first L-G of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir on October 31, 2019, under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
There are speculations that he has been promised a higher position in the bureaucracy. Sources said that he has perhaps been offered the position of CAG as Rajiv Mehrishi will complete his tenure at the position on Aug 7, 2020.
GC Murmu is a 1985 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Gujarat cadre. He also served as the principal secretary to PM Narendra Modi during his tenure as the chief minister of Gujarat.
