    India breaks record with over 1.8 lakh new Covid cases

    India recorded 1,84,372 new Covid-19 cases in the highest single-day spike ever since the pandemic began last year. With the fresh cases, the country's positive cases tally has mounted to 1,38,73,825, according to the data provided by the Ministry of and Family Welfare on Wednesday morning.

    Meanwhile, a total of 1,027 people succumbed to the Covid-19 infection in the last 24 hours, pushing the death toll to 1,72,085.

    The active Covid-19 caseload in stands at 13,65,704, while 1,23,36,036 people have been cured so far.

    On Tuesday, India had reported a total of 1,61,736 new coronavirus infections in a day. With India breaking its pandemic record every day, several states across the country have imposed fresh curbs and curfew to contain the virus spread.

    A day ago (on Tuesday), the Maharashtra government announced a strict ‘janta curfew', starting 8 pm on April 14 till 7 am on May 1. The decision came on the day the state reported 60,212 new Covid-19 cases, a considerable rise from Monday when it reported 51,751 new cases. The state had recorded its highest single-day spike on Sunday with 63,294 cases.

    Ten states show an upward trajectory of daily new cases and account for 82.04 per cent of the new cases registered in the last 24 hours, the Union health ministry said on Wednesday.

    Delhi recorded 13,468 new Covid-19 cases in a span of 24 hours, while West Bengal recorded the highest single-day spike of 4,817 coronavirus cases in day.

    The coronavirus tally in rose to 2.79 lakh on Tuesday with 3,003 new infections, while 53 more deaths took the toll to 7,609, a health bulletin said.

    Besides, more than 11 crore vaccine doses have been administered in India till Tuesday. Of this, nearly 1 crore vaccine doses were administered since the start of Tika Utsav, the Union health ministry said.
