Crime against women shows fluctuating trend

The state government on Monday said that during the last three years, the crime against women has shown a fluctuating trend.

“The crime against women during last three years has shown a fluctuating trend with decrease during the year 2014 as compared to the year 2013 and slight increase during the year 2015 as compared to year 2014,” Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti who is incharge Home department informed the upper House in a written reply to the question of BJP MLC Charanjeet Singh.

She said that at least 3535 cases were registered in the year 2014 while 2567 cases were challaned. “In the year 2014, 169 cases were convicted and 5088 persons were arrested,” she said, adding that in the year 2015, the crime against women was slightly increased as 3539 cases were register in the year.

“In the year 2015, 2631 cases were challaned while 129 were convicted. 5307 persons were arrested during the year,” she said.

Mehbooba said that efforts are being made by the prosecution staff deployed in various courts to ensure timely presence of witness to secure conviction of the accused.

“Further, measures have been taken to ensure timely processing of warrant and summons at police station levels and regular monitoring of trails in the courts by prosecution staff. Concerned superintendents of Police have been directed to conduct crime monitoring meeting, on monthly basis, to get first hand information about the investigation and progress in trial of such cases,” she said.

Chief Minister said that similarly, circular instructions have been issued to all the district SP's to make special efforts to investigate all cases related to crime against women properly under immediate supervisory guidance and that special investigation teams may be constituted for the purpose, as necessary.
