Subramanian to take charge as Secretary, Department of Commerce on June 30
Jammu Tawi, May 27: In a major reshuffle at the top level administration, 1988 batch IAS Officer of AGMUT Cadre Arun Kumar Mehta is appointed as Chief Secretary of Jammu & Kashmir by replacing present CS, BVR Subramaniyam. In this regard Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla in an order issued here, said that Mehta will take over as Chief Secretary, J&K from the date that B.V.R. Subrahmanyam relinquishes the charge, and until further orders.
The appointee Mehta tweeted, “A chance to serve J&K as a chief Secretary is indeed an honour for me. I will leave no stone unturned to work for the welfare of people. Thanks everyone for your wishes and blessings.”

The order to this effect reads, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), vide its order dated 27.05.2021, has approved the appointment of Shri B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, IAS (CG: 1987), Chief Secretary, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Department of Commerce, Government of India. The ACC has also approved his appointment as Secretary, Department of Commerce, upon the superannuation of the present incumbent on 30.06.2021. Pursuant to the aforesaid order, it has been decided with the approval of the Competent Authority that Shri Arun Kumar Mehta, IAS (AGMUT: 1988) will take over as Chief Secretary, J&K from the date that Shri B.V.R. Subrahmanyam relinquishes the charge, and until further orders. It further read that orders to this effect may be issued by the Government of Jammu & Kashmir.”
A non-controversial IAS officer, Mehta has held key bureaucratic positions in Jammu & Kashmir and at New Delhi during his 33-year bureaucratic career.
He has held key field postings in J&K including deputy commissioner Baramulla, additional deputy commissioner Jammu and sub- divisional magistrate Basholi.
He served as deputy commissioner of Baramulla between May 19, 1994 to April 19, 1997 when militancy was at its peak in J&K.
He also served as power secretary of Jammu and Kashmir before proceeding on central deputation. He served as additional secretary in Union Ministry of Environments, Forests and Climate Change.
After returning to J&K in 2018, Mehta helmed the Finance department and took several initiatives to fast-track development process and bring accountability and transparency in governance.
In April 2020, Mehta was empaneled as secretary to the Government of India
In another order, BVR Subramanian has been appointed as OSD, Department of Commerce. He will further be appointed as Secretary Department of Commerce on June 30, 2021. the order reads,
