Army cracks down on ex-soldiers spreading misinformation on social media

New Delhi: The Indian Army has initiated strict actions against former soldiers allegedly spreading misinformation and damaging its reputation on social media platforms. Sources indicate that Army headquarters has directed all commands to monitor social media activity vigilantly and to file FIRs against any ex-serviceman found engaging in such activities.

A recent case in Jaipur saw the Army filing an FIR against a former soldier who repeatedly made allegations against the army and its functioning through a YouTube channel. The Army has reportedly placed several other ex-servicemen, particularly those dismissed from service for indiscipline, under its radar for similar actions.

To address the growing issue, Army headquarters has instructed all commands to track social media accounts involved in spreading false narratives about the Army, and take legal action against the offenders. Commands have been directed to collect detailed information, identify the individuals responsible, and ensure FIRs are filed under appropriate legal sections.

This crackdown follows a previous advisory issued by the Army’s Adjutant General (AG) Branch in 2024, reminding all commands of the Army Pension Regulation Act-2008. The advisory noted that any ex-serviceman found guilty of serious misconduct could have their pension withheld or reduced. It emphasized that maintaining good conduct after retirement is a requirement for receiving pension benefits.

Internal Army reports have raised concerns that some former soldiers have been using social media to spread negative propaganda about the army, especially criticizing service conditions and life. The inflammatory language used in these posts has been flagged as harmful, with the potential to influence public opinion negatively. There are also fears that such misinformation could be exploited by adversaries to harm national security.

In response, the Army has ramped up efforts to counteract the spread of false information and safeguard the integrity of its reputation.
