Agricultural Intricacies

Date:

Despite being an Agri-based country since ages, there have been plenty of intricacies associated with sector as can be gauged by the uneven price fluctuations of produce like the case of tomatoes this season and also onions, which are presently showing upward trend as far as their rates are concerned forcing the government to take immediate steps to contain the situation avoiding the crisis that the country faced in case of tomatoes.

In this context, the Centre has imposed 40 per cent duty on onion export to manage demand-supply change intrinsically. Such steps although become necessary to maintain supplies but their results at times create problems like the conflict between traders and governments because 40 per cent duty till December 31, 2023 will impact export and also dwindle profits of farmers, who already have been facing so many problems.

Though, onion prices are still stable in J&K and other north Indian states but various factors including heavy rains, infection, poor yield, etc. have taken toll of the produce in the states growing onions and unprecedented price hike is inevitable in coming days justifying the aforesaid step taken by the government.    This is a simple overview of Indian Agriculture Sector from a particular angle but going by its vastness with number of intricacies it becomes a whole time affair to tackle all of them by always looking for panaceas and remedies.

The intricacies within this sector have a significant impact on the in several ways as could be seen in the cases of tomatoes and onions if one carries out case study of the same. Under normal conditions, India's vast geographical and climatic variations allow for the cultivation of a wide variety of crops ensuring a year-round supply of vegetables, grains, and fruits. This contributes to food security and a balanced diet for the population. However, if any factors such as climate or pests begin to behave abnormally, the situation can become chaotic. This is evident in the recent dearth in tomato supply from Karnataka, which has caused prices to rise to unprecedented levels.

Addressing the challenges within this sector, such as improving infrastructure, adopting sustainable practices, and mitigating the effects of climate change, is essential for ensuring a resilient and prosperous agricultural economy in India.

The main contributor in making things smooth and unproblematic is the government because if this entity had worked impeccably the situation like that of price surge of tomatoes would not have been surfaced thus one can say that government holds the key and can assuage agricultural hassles by taking timely steps and educating the tillers to inculcate good agri practices to avert dearth or over production of crops as both are suicidal for the farming community and those associated with this sector.
