Huge funds released for ‘Non-existent, incomplete projects

Sunderbani, June 24: With the passage of time, the investigation initiated by Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB), in an alleged corruption in Nala Panchayat’s development project, appears to have been shelved to cold storage.
According to sources, there were allegations regarding payments of money for non-existent or incomplete projects like wells, footpaths, and roads.
“There were allegations that money has been released for the projects which were either non-existent or are still incomplete,” said sources, adding that these allegations, back then, prompted an ACB inquiry, but the probe’s current status remains shrouded in mystery, raising questions about its fate besides accountability and transparency.
Years back it was revealed how funds were allegedly siphoned off for works that never materialized, including a well and various infrastructure projects.
“Following a formal complaint, the ACB visited the sites, collected materials, and initiated an inquiry,” said sources, adding that however, despite these initial steps, no updates have been provided, and no action has been taken against the alleged implicated parties, including Block Level Workers (BLWs) and Junior Engineers (JEs).
Sources suggested that the inaction may stem from systemic issues, including possible political pressure or reluctance by senior officials to pursue junior employees involved in the irregularities.
“If small-scale officers are at fault, why aren’t senior officials acting on complaints filed with them?” questioned an activist.
He added that the lack of follow-up has led to speculation that the ACB’s investigation may have been deliberately dumped, allowing those responsible to evade accountability.
The stalled probe has sparked concerns about the ACB’s commitment to tackling corruption.
“If the agency doesn’t act, it emboldens corrupt officials, big or small,” assumed activist, adding that there is a perception that political influences may be protecting wrongdoers, with BLWs and JEs allegedly pressured to engage in or overlook corrupt practices.
The continued reliance on recommendations for project approvals further exacerbates the issue, leaving deserving residents without essential services.
