Horticulture suffers Rs 1568 Cr. loss in floods, rain

SRINAGAR:  The Horticulture sector has suffered Rs 1568 crore loss in the valley during 2014 devastating flood and incessant rain.

However, the Government of (GoI) has yet to release any funds for paying compensation to farmers, Minister Incharge Horticulture Gulam Nabi Lone said in reply to a question by Mohammad Akbar Lone in the Legislative Assembly today.

The reply said crop loss of Rs 1,568 crore was assessed by the Revenue Department for Horticulture sector due to incessant rains and floods of September 2014. However, 50 per cent compensation of Rs 748 crore was recommended by the revenue department and was included in the Memorandum submitted to the GoI.

However, he said no funds have been released by the GoI so far.

In Baramulla crops on 28,000 hacters area, worth Rs 387.66 crore was damaged followed by Kupwara Rs 235.03 crore, Shopian Rs 214.18 crore,  Kulgam Rs 146.51 crore, Anantnag Rs 145.47 crore,  Pulwama Rs 94.15 crore,  Ganderbal Rs 59.64 crore, Badgam Rs 56.46 crore, Bandipora Rs 50.34 crore and Srinagar Rs 35.61 crore.
