SRINAGAR, Oct 23: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators on Thursday staged a protest in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly after National Conference (NC) MLA Bashir Ahmad Veeri referred to the BJP as a “communal party” during obituary references.
According to news agency, Veeri, while paying tributes to former BJP MLC Ramesh Arora, praised his contributions but remarked that Arora, “despite being part of a communal party, had a secular mindset.”
The comment immediately drew protests from BJP members, who stood up from their benches and demanded action against the NC legislator for his remarks.
BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma objected strongly, saying that derogatory remarks were inappropriate during obituary references, which are meant solely for paying respects.
Intervening in the matter, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather urged all members to avoid controversial statements during condolence motions, emphasizing the need to maintain the decorum of the House. (KNO)
