Aizawl, Aug 20: Mizoram’s capital Aizawl has been connected to the Indian Railways network for the first time with the completion of the 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang New Line Railway Project, officials said. Executed under the Act East Policy, the project features 48 tunnels spanning 12.85 km and 142 bridges, including Bridge No. 196 — the country’s second tallest pier bridge at 114 meters, towering 42 meters above the Qutub Minar. The tunnels are also adorned with traditional Mizo murals, blending infrastructure with local art.
The project was completed in four phases and received CRS clearance in June 2025, paving the way for operations. Mizoram now becomes the fourth Northeastern state capital directly linked to the national railway network.
Authorities said the new connectivity will cut transportation costs, boost trade, tourism, and employment, and accelerate socio-economic growth in Mizoram and the wider Northeast region.
