New Delhi, Aug 20: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a ‘Jan Sunwai’ programme at her Civil Lines camp office on Wednesday morning, prompting a swift police response, officials said.
The accused, identified as Rajesh Bhaiji from Rajkot, Gujarat, was immediately detained and is being interrogated. Police officials, including the North Delhi DCP, rushed to the spot, while security at the camp office has been tightened.
According to eyewitnesses, the man approached Gupta with some papers before suddenly grabbing her hand and attempting to pull her. He was overpowered by those present.
The Chief Minister’s Office confirmed the incident, adding that Gupta is “shaken but safe.” Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said she is resting but will continue her scheduled programmes.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has been informed, and Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh also visited the site. Political leaders, including Atishi and Manjinder Singh Sirsa, condemned the attack, calling it unacceptable. (Agencies)
