Dr. Manmohan Singh, a visionary and a selfless servant of the nation, has passed away. On December 26, 2024, at the age of 92, he breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. With his demise, India bids farewell to an era defined by humility, intellect, and unwavering dedication to nation-building. Dr. Singh’s contributions to India’s economic and political landscape are unparalleled. Renowned as the architect of India’s 1991 economic reforms, his tenure as Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was nothing short of transformative. At a time when the Indian economy was on the brink of bankruptcy, Singh implemented bold measures that liberalized the economy, dismantled the license raj, and opened the doors to foreign investment. These reforms not only pulled India back from the brink of collapse but also laid the foundation for decades of robust growth and development. As Finance Minister, Singh prioritized the devaluation of the rupee, tax moderation, privatization of public sector enterprises, and the promotion of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). These initiatives marked India’s transition into a globally integrated economy and established his legacy as one of the nation’s most accomplished economists. Dr. Singh’s entry into politics was driven by duty, not ambition. Known as a reluctant politician, he took on the role of Prime Minister in 2004, leading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. His tenure was characterized by the same commitment and vision that had defined his career as an economist. Serving two consecutive terms until 2014, he exemplified leadership marked by humility and resolve. One of the most defining moments of his prime ministerial tenure was the Indo-US nuclear deal in 2008. This landmark agreement underscored his courage and conviction. Despite staunch opposition from the Left Front, which withdrew its support from the government, Singh’s administration survived a vote of confidence with backing from the Samajwadi Party. The deal not only elevated India’s status on the global stage but also reflected Singh’s unwavering commitment to the nation’s strategic interests. Often described as a ‘gentleman leader,’ Dr. Singh was a man of integrity who preferred dialogue to confrontation. His humility was legendary, yet his principles were unshakable. He earned respect across party lines for his intellect and moral uprightness. While his tenure as Prime Minister faced criticism for perceived passivity, his calm demeanor and quiet determination left an enduring mark on Indian governance. The nation’s decision to observe a seven-day period of mourning is a fitting tribute to this great visionary. His last rites will be conducted with full state honors. Though his absence leaves a void, his contributions to India’s progress and his example of selfless service will continue to inspire generations.
