Jammu Tawi, Dec 16: Daily wagers, casual labourers, and need-based workers of the Public Works (R&B) Department held a protest outside the office of the Chief Engineer, PW(R&B) Department, Lok Nirman Bhawan, Rail Head Complex, Jammu on Monday demanding the regularization of their services.

The workers, many of whom have been serving the department for over two decades in various roles such as computer operators, draftsmen, drivers, cooks, plumbers, and electricians, have expressed their dissatisfaction over the lack of job security. Despite their long service, they have not been regularized, leaving them without social security benefits like EPF/ESI and excluded from government welfare schemes. The workers highlighted that a total of 2,272 need-based casual labourers are registered with the department from Jammu Division. They also pointed out that many of their colleagues are above the age of 40 and are approaching retirement, with some already retired without receiving regular employment status. In addition, the workers raised concerns over the families of deceased colleagues, many of whom passed away during service due to both natural causes and the ongoing turmoil. They have requested that the department offer employment to a family member of each deceased worker to help support their families. The workers appeal Chief Engineer and relevant authorities to issue necessary orders for their regularization, ensuring their job security and providing a better future for their families.
