Los Blancos fans were overjoyed earlier this week as club icon Luka Modric committed to staying on for another season. At 37 years old, the midfielder is still competing at the highest level and has further cemented his status as a Real Madrid legend by extending his illustrious stint in the Spanish capital.
Having arrived in 2012, Modric has been instrumental in the most successful period in the club’s history, winning 26 trophies including five Champions League titles. A statement from Real revealed that the veteran Croatian has signed on until 2030, where he will also continue to lead the side as captain.
Over 534 appearances in which he has dazzled with his magic on the ball and superb reading of the game, Modric has lived up to his substantial price tag time and time again. Last season was no different as he played a pivotal role in Real claiming both La Liga and Europe’s elite club competition once more.
While some expected him to retire following Toni Kroos’ decision to hang up his boots, Modric clearly still has plenty to offer. For club and country where he holds the appearance record with 178 caps, the little maestro shows no signs of slowing down. Real supporters will be hoping there is still more silverware to come before his distinguished career reaches its conclusion.
But for now, the celebrated midfielder seems intent on making the most of every minute he has left, giving their loyal fans another chance to savor his skills at the famed Santiago Bernabeu one last time. This one year extension excites for what is still to come from this exceptional talent before his glorious chapter with Los Blancos comes to an end.
