Real Madrid announced yesterday that a court in Spain has found an individual guilty of racially abusing two of their Black players, Vinicius Junior and Antonio Rudiger, on a popular soccer website last season.
The offender posted hateful and racist comments targeting the Brazilian and German internationals in the comments section of the website in response to their on-field performances. The remarks not only contained racially charged language but also insulted Rudiger’s Muslim faith.
The court ruled that the individual’s actions amounted to causing harm to the moral integrity of both players and were aggravated by being motivated by racism as well as religious intolerance in Rudiger’s case.
As a result, the abuser was handed an eight-month prison sentence, though this has been suspended on the condition that they participate in an awareness program against discrimination.
This marks a positive step in the fight against online racism, with it being one of the first convictions in Spanish football for such remarks on a digital platform. Both Vinicius and Rudiger have previously expressed their struggles with racist abuse both on and off the field. It is hoped this ruling will help deter such hateful behavior targeting players due to the color of their skin or their faith.
Real Madrid will continue supporting all their players affected by discrimination and working with authorities to tackle this unacceptable issue both on the internet and in stadiums. Tackling racism in football requires action from all parts of the game.
