Welcome repealing farm laws with a heavy heart: Azad

Political Parties celebrate repeal as farmers’ victory

Jammu Tawi, Nov 19: Former Leader of opposition and veteran Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Friday regretted that the decision to withdraw the farm laws was delayed and lamented the loss of farmers’ lives in the year-long protests.

He said this decision should have been made during the last Parliament session when the Opposition was staging protests, instead of repealing the laws when elections were near.

“Many people lost lives; people are still on Dharna’, this law saw many walk outs and arrests. It could be better if the decision to repeal it was taken much earlier,” Azad said while addressing hurriedly called press Congress in Jammu.

He further added that everybody in opposition fought for farmers’ cause but the BJP led central government took almost two years to repeal it.

“When I was leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, we told the government that we make laws for people and if they are not happy then it’s not wrong to impose it (farm law) on them,” he said.

“If the decision was taken earlier, the dignity of parliament could be restored and many lives could be saved,” he said. “I welcome the decision of repealing the farm laws with heavy heart.”

He further adds that people should not make it an issue of victory or defeat, as people won their battle.

On Lt Governor’s statement regarding wiping out of militancy in two years, Azad said, “I wish, I will be happier if this could happen and I request every political party to cooperate.”

On being removed from the AICC’s disciplinary committee, he said “I was part of the disciplinary committee for quite a long time. I was in the Committee during Rajeev Gandhi’s time, 25-30 years back. This committee does not meet regularly, it meets once in two years. I don’t remember when we met last time. This is not a very big thing.”

    JKPCC

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president, Ghulam Ahmad Mir on Friday termed the decision to revoke three farm laws as the historic victory of agitating farmers and Congress party under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi.

The party remembered former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 104th birth anniversary.

Mir, who presided over the meeting of senior party leaders and workers at Srinagar party office paid floral tributes to Indira Gandhi on her birth anniversary. On this occasion, Mir paid floral tributes to Gandhi and recalled her selfless services and sacrifices to the nation.

Addressing the meeting, Mir said the iron lady Indira Gandhi shall always be remembered for her vision and leadership qualities, who was also credited for making the nation as strong in respect of defense, economic, education and on various other fronts, while she remained committed to serve and empower all sections of people, equally.

Gandhi’s valour and vision brought laurels to the nation, she will always be remembered for her achievements and making the nation self-reliant and powerful in every respect, Mir added and said the Nation would continue to remember Gandhi for her sacrifice’s services and achievements.

Gandhi ensured inclusive development of the Nation in every respect, JKPCC president said.

On this occasion, Mir termed the Centre’s decision to revoke three black farming laws as the history victory of unity of farmers and Congress party under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, who remained steadfast to support farmers in their fight against these black laws, which were brought to benefit corporates by the Centre government.

Mir said Rahul Gandhi has been saying from day one that Centre had to revoke black laws, as that, these were detrimental to the farmers of the country, which would not be acceptable to them (Farmers),saluted the courage of farmers and also congratulated Rahul Gandhi for his support and fight against black farming laws.

The decision of the Centre Govt is based on the fact that BJP is sensing worst defeat in the upcoming elections in five states as the public opinion is against BJP for punishing people under the garb of development, which is nowhere to be seen, JKPCC President said.

    CPM

The Polit Bureau of CPI (M) Friday saluted the historic victory of the year-long spirited, inspiring and courageous struggle by the kisans under the leadership of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha.

In a statement, CPI (M) said, “An obdurate PM and his government were forced to bend. Yet Modi continues to justify these black laws blaming a section of farmers being misled. There is no remorse expressed at the deaths of our farmers or the attacks against them.”

The CPI (M) reiterated that the parliament while repealing these black laws enacted the legal right to sell at MSP for all agricultural crops.

More than 750 farmers have been martyred in this struggle. They faced hostility from the BJP administration with military type roadblocks, threats, intimidations and murderous physical attacks. Strict action must be taken against all such people who have indulged in these activities, the statement said.

The CPI (M) hailed the determination of our farmers and endorses the SKM’s approach that they shall wait to see the materialization of these assurances before returning to their villages.
