Prime Minister Naredra Modi is on a three-day tour to Israel. The ‘historic' visit is a first by any Indian Prime Minister to Middle Eastern country.
Israel's defence power is recognised as one of the most advanced and robust even by world's most powerful nations.
According to reports, India will buy nearly $2 billion worth of weapons technology from Israel in what's being described as the ‘largest defence contract' ever signed with Israel.Â
As PM Modi visits Israel, a country which is considered a military exporting giant, here is an interesting story about the country.
THE 6-DAY WAR (5-10 JUNE, 1967)
-
Surrounded by Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt, Israel is the only Jewish country. Ever since its independence in 1948, Israel has been on the radar of its neighbouring nations.
-
The Arab countries launched an offensive on Israel soon after its independence. Israel won the war which continued for about a year. Israel captured a major portion of Palestine during this conflict.
-
In June 1967, Egypt, Syria and Jordan again planned attack on Israel from three sides.
-
On the one side, Egypt moved its troops on the border with Israel and on the anotherfront Syria deployed its air force near Golan Heights.
- War was inevitable. Israel was all prepared for it. The country's dreaded intelligence agency – Mossad – had then possessed world's best electronic warning system.
- Within the first few hours of the war, Israel showed its defence capabilities to the Arab nations.
- In about three hours, Israel shot down 300 of the 340 fighter jets of Egypt.
- Israel captured Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and Gaza strip. It also captured Golan Height and West Bank after defeating Syria and Jordan.
