    Unholy Nexus in Health sector!

In an era where healthcare should stand as a pillar of trust and service, the diagnostic sector in Jammu and Kashmir is increasingly becoming a space of unchecked exploitation. Widespread disparities in test pricing, inconsistent diagnostic outcomes, and a growing nexus between doctors and private laboratories have created an alarming situation—one that demands immediate government intervention.

Across the Union Territory, patients are being subjected to arbitrary rates for identical tests. The absence of a standard rate list has allowed private diagnostic centres to charge as per their will, often exploiting the desperation of the ill and their families. For the same test, charges can range from Rs 700 to Rs 1200—or even higher—without any justification. This is nothing short of profiteering in the name of healthcare.

Worse still is the lack of diagnostic consistency. Multiple reports suggest that different labs are producing conflicting results for the same patient on the same day. In a region already grappling with limited public health infrastructure, such discrepancies can have devastating consequences on the health and financial stability of individuals.

Adding fuel to the fire is the deepening nexus between certain doctors and private diagnostic centres. It is an open secret that most of the labs offer hefty commissions to doctors for referring patients to their facilities. This unholy alliance transforms healthcare from a noble service to a commercial transaction, where patient welfare takes a backseat to personal gain.

This unethical practice is particularly burdensome in the current climate of high inflation, where every rupee counts for ordinary families. People are being forced to pay inflated rates not because of quality, but because of behind-the-scenes arrangements between professionals who are supposed to uphold the sanctity of healthcare.

While private diagnostic centres themselves have raised the demand for a government-notified rate list—acknowledging that uniformity would ensure accountability—the delay from authorities in implementing such regulations is inexcusable. A formal rate structure is essential to bring transparency, restore public faith, and deter unethical practices.

The government must act swiftly to break this cycle of exploitation. It must notify and enforce a uniform rate list for all diagnostic tests and simultaneously put in place stringent monitoring mechanisms to detect and penalize collusion between medical professionals and labs. Patients deserve honesty, consistency, and affordability in medical testing—not a gamble with their health and finances. The time for promises is over; the time for action is now.
