UAPA Court Convicts Towseef Ahmed Thokar in 2021 Imam Sahab Terror Case

KULGAM, Nov 13: The NIA/UAPA Court for Kulgam and Shopian on Thursday convicted Towseef Ahmed Thokar, son of Mohammad Yousaf Thokar of Khawajapora Reban, Zainapora, for his involvement in the 2021 Imam Sahab encounter case, officials said.

The case, registered under FIR No. 25/2021 at Police Station Imam Sahab, pertains to an encounter on May 5, 2021, in which three militants — Danish Ahmed Mir, Zahid Bashir, and Umar Hassan Bhat — were killed, while Towseef was apprehended alive from the site along with arms and ammunition.

The court found the accused guilty under Sections 16, 18, and 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Section 307 of the IPC, and Section 7/27 of the Arms Act. The matter has been adjourned for sentencing on November 17, 2025.

In a detailed judgment, Special Judge Parvaiz Iqbal underscored the need for courts to adopt a stringent approach in terror-related cases, noting that such acts threaten national security and the rule of law. However, he also emphasized the importance of ensuring fair trials and constitutional safeguards.

The judge commended the Investigating Officer and Prosecution for their professionalism, observing that the investigation was “carried out in a systematic and credible manner,” and that the evidence convincingly established the accused’s role in the case.

“The prosecution has successfully proved all the charges against the accused through cogent and reliable evidence,” the judgment stated, affirming Towseef’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt. (KNC)
